Fabric finishing of walls, design of walls, trimming. Decorative finishing of walls
Wall fabric as a decorative element comes back and becomes popular again. Nice fabrics on walls remind us antique interiors when walls were decorated with different jacquard fabrics or tapestry. Decorative fabrics are also an important component of apartment ornamentation: they can influence emotional colouring and general character of your unique interior.
Selection of fabric for walls decoration
The most important requirement for wall fabric is that fabric shall be rather elastic and resistant to dirtying. Walls can be decorated with cotton, flax, mixtures of cotton and flax, viscose or wool. It is also possible to use furniture fabric for walls finishing as it is perfectly resistant to humidity in the result of special treatment.
Do not use fabrics made of glass fiber as they may cause some difficulties in further maintenance.
Fabric 3 meters wide is produced specially for walls tapestry. You shall take into consideration that the length of canvas shall match the width of the wall with some spare cloth to fix fabric at corners.
When choosing decorative fabrics for walls decoration it is important to take into account not only their utilitarian purpose, but also harmony of all elements in the apartment. For example, single-colour fabrics match almost any interior, and in small apartments where rooms are directly connected with each other it is possible to use fabrics with the same tracery, but with different colour shades. This method contributes to visual unification of spaces as if extending apartment space and providing harmonious interior at the same time.
Wall tapestry technology
Preparation of fabric
As fabric can shrink under sousing and drying, it shall be previously checked at the piece of fabric (soak it and dry). If you see that fabric shrinks a lot, soak it all and dry. With little shrinkage fabric can be used as it will favour its better stretching on the surface.
Preparation of walls
Surface of walls shall be prepared as if for glueing with pressure sensitive adhesives: it shall be smooth and well-glazed. It’s better to use glue based on CMC, mastics, casein glue or flour paste.
Fixation of fabric on the wall
Before fixation of fabric walls shall be covered with thin layer of glue, and then fabric is laid and levelled with a brush from the middle of canvas to its edges with herring-bone movements. Always control joint with neighbouring canvas.
You can also fix fabric to the wall with laths or frames. With such method of decoration, fix wooden laths 10 mm thick on the wall: to the ceilingm to the left edge of the wall, around doors and windows. Small pieces of lath are also put around switches and sockets. At the right edge of the wall laths are fixed later together with fabric. After laths have been fixed, the wall between them is covered with foam plastic plates 16 mm thick which provides better sound proofing. Then fabric is tacked with brackets to the wall edges and only after than outlines of doors and windows are cut and their edges are covered with L-bar. After fabric has been stretched, openings for switches and sockets shall be cut. To complete decoration, upper and lower edges of tapestry are covered with a lath or fabric edge.
